One of the most revolting newcomers in the death metal underground, CAUSTIC PHLEGM is set to drop their long-awaited debut album, “Purulent Apocalypse”, delivering slime-drenched, crushing death metal that oozes decay and pure filth.
Formed by Evan Vasilakos (CHESTCRUSH), this UK-based project first made its mark with the “Putrefying Flesh” demo in 2022, later reissued on 7” vinyl by HELLS HEADBANGERS in 2023. Now, the band takes things even further with a full-length offering of murky, festering devastation.
“Purulent Apocalypse” is a putrid concoction of first-era CARCASS, PUNGENT STENCH, and ENTOMBED, infused with the heaviness of modern acts like UNDERGANG, CRYPTWORM, and CEREBRAL ROT. The album doesn’t rely on sheer speed—the riffing is absolutely crushing, the tempos lurch forward like a rotting corpse on autopilot, and the guttural vocals are coated in layers of filth. Vintage synth elements creep in at unexpected moments, heightening the eerie, VHS-era horror vibe that CAUSTIC PHLEGM has embraced since their early material.
“I wanted to utilize my HM2 and RAT pedals, which I love, and play something simple, to have fun without overthinking it like I do in Chestcrush,” says Vasilakos. “Just plug in, record the first riff in mind, and gurgle.”
Visually completed with psychedelic-horror artwork by Gorey Corey Tornlimbs, “Purulent Apocalypse” solidifies CAUSTIC PHLEGM as one of the foulest and most uncompromising death metal acts today. The album will be available on CD, vinyl LP, and cassette via HELLS HEADBANGERS. Prepare for total putrescence!
