KOURISTUS – Demo 2022, Demo 2019 & Teurastamo EP

kouristus review

Finnish grindcore/hardcore punk band KOURISTUS delivers a combined release that includes material from their demo recordings in 2019 and 2022, as well as the “Teurastamo” EP dating 2018.

This collection offers an ideal glimpse into the band’s sonic evolution by emphasizing their relentless approach to crafting chaotic and brutal tracks. The releases are arranged from the most recent to the earliest, clearly highlighting the progress in sound and production over time. It’s especially intriguing to notice the production shift between the releases, with each stage of sound development reflected in increasingly refined and pronounced presentation. As a fan of Swedish d-beat and grindcore, I found this release particularly appealing.

From the very start, it’s evident that KOURISTUS cares little for polished production or commercial appeal. Their sound is raw, organic, and sometimes on the brink of collapse, but that very sense of instability adds an extra layer of power to their music. The drums are relentless, the guitars slice through the mix like a knife, while the vocals convey pain, rage, and dark introspection with an unrefined and unfiltered intensity.

The sound of this collection exudes a raw DIY aesthetic, yet the evolution in approach and production is clearly noticeable. Tracks like “Haaveita väkivallasta” introduce slower d-beat moments, while blast beats dominate the faster sections, providing intense dynamics and a clear influence from Swedish d-beat sound. Additionally, “Vuoristorata” and “Huonosti valvottu yö” further highlight the speed and energy of this release. These tracks stood out to me as personal favorites.

“Demo 2022, Demo 2019 & Teurastamo EP” is an unpolished, honest, and uncompromising release that perfectly reflects the band’s philosophy. Fans of unfiltered grindcore, as well as those who appreciate elements of punk and metal, will find plenty of value here. KOURISTUS may not be for everyone, but for those who cherish chaos and authenticity, this release is a real treat. Let these 15-songs collection keep your speakers burning until the next killer release – a split EP with Brazilian band FERIDA ABERTA.
