Malmö Massacre, with its 2024 edition, promises to carve its name into the annals of death metal and grindcore history. Elis Markskog, the visionary founder of Malmö Massacre festival, gave us a deep insight into the festival’s humble beginnings and this year’s insane lineup.

Hi Elis, thanks for your time to say a couple of words about Malmo Massacre.

So yeah, the festival started 2018 as a single day fest. Second year got cancelled due to covid restrictions. The third year it grew a bit with headliners such as GENERAL SURGERY and CENTINEX, and we added an extra day.

First and and second time we made the festival it also included movie screenings.

I showed my own documentary about Obscene Extreme Festival as my deeply respect for the festival and its founder Curby.

At the second edition of the festival we showed underground splatter, horror and gore movies as well. The third year we also had movie screenings, but then we only showed shorter movies. The forth year we stepped up and booked the headliners CARCASS and CULT OF LUNA, and bands that earlier could headline the festival became co headliners such as DEMONICAL and ROTTEN SOUND. We also broaden our pick of bands to include black metal, grindcore as well as death metal. Earlier, I would say we only booked deathmetal and grindcore.

For last year’s edition I included my friend Fredrik Larzon to the booking crew. He has a lot of experience in the music business and a lot of good skills, and he is a calm guy, and I have always been the wild card. Two good personalities that work good together.

For the 2024 edition we added an extra day to the fest.

So this year we have 39 bands on 2 stages for 3 days. We have short movies planned to be showed, we have an art exhibition where Mattias Frisk will show his album artwork, and we have the legendary tattoo artist Carlos Aguilar for our visitors enjoyment to ink their so sinful flesh.

Why did you start the fest?

I started the fest because I love the extreme music, and I felt Sweden needed a more extreme fest that didn’t book classic metal acts and had focus on the extreme, that is our focus.
I also play in the grindcore band BIRDFLESH, and also in cross over band HATCHEND and the black metal band JORDFÄST.

Three bands that would all fit the concept of Malmö Massacre.

What is the festival capacity?

The fest has a total capacity of 1000 people. We will maybe have to build an outside stage for the 2025 edition since we have grown a bit since the start. Let’s see what happens.

The energy behind the fest is for sure 100% the love of the extreme. That’s it. And it is a great way for us to meet our friends in one place. It’s just great.

I included my friends for making the website (dawwwg/Semih), and Luis Sendon made the art work since day one. My friend Luis Ifer (TEETHING singer) help me out with T-shirt design, and I also made a design my self, I love being creative, of course.

So this is truly something special for me and Fredrik.

Plan B is the venue where we have the fest, it is run buy a awesome guy called Carlo. He is also a part of the crew, he backs us up with the financial part and he also has some fun ideas we try out.

I also want to say thank you to friends that has volunteered as stage hands, helped out with promotion, helped me out with positive energy and just being good friends. They know who they are for sure, I can’t name drop just a few so I say thank you to all.
