MASOCHRIST, one-man project coming from Salt Lake City, Utah, bursts onto the scene with their debut album, “Grimecode: DCLXVI,” co-released under Grindwar Records.
Blasting in at a blistering 16 minutes and 54 seconds, this 18-track piece is, actually, very well produced and sounds like full-members band.
The album’s thematic depth is addressing issues of mental illness, anti-fascism, social concerns, and a fervent critique of religious ideologies. It is melodic deathgrind influenced by INTESTINE BAALISM, AT THE GATES, APPALLING SPAWN, XYSMA, CARCASS, LOCK UP, NASUM, SKITSYSTEM, HIS HERO IS GONE, PAGENINETYNINE, etc.
Fully played and recorded by Connor G. Carlson, ‘Grimecode: DCLXVI’ showcases excellent combination from both genres, seamlessly weaving melodic intricacies with the brutality characteristic of grindcore. Carlson’s multifaceted approach to vocals adds an extra layer of dynamism, ranging from piercing shries to guttural growls.
The production is crisp, allowing the raw energy of the music to shine through without sacrificing clarity. From the furious riffing to the relentless drumming, Masochrist delivers a sonic barrage that demands attention.
