With a crazy new single just dropped and a new album in the works, it’s the perfect time to catch up with TEETHING to hear what makes the band tick, where we can see them live these days, and more.
Hey guys, thanks for your time, hope you’re having a beer or two because this heat is unbearable. 😀
Hey! Antonio speaking!! Thanks for reaching out and give us your space, appreciate it! Yeah imagine it in Madrid, this is like living in an fucking oven.
So, TEETHING has, you can say in short time, carved out a unique space in the European grindcore scene. Can you say for yourselves that you achieved success? Hahahaha 😀 Tell us more about TEETHING.
Wow!, thank you! that’s an statement!, but, Hahaha, there’s no such thing as “success” in the European grindcore scene, or not that I know of, apart from a bunch of incredible bands such as NAPALM DEATH or ROTTEN SOUND. We’re just four hardcore guys from Madrid with similar (bad) tastes in music that LOVE TO PLAY (👈 this is the success you were talking about) as much as possible and the further, the better. Sorry, we still have to work to make a living obviously.
You come from Spain. What makes the Spanish grindcore music scene unique, and I mean with the other grind subgenres. Has it influenced TEETHING’s development in any way through all these years?
Not at all, to tell the truth, Spanish grind scene sucks, not much to look at, above all, after Looking For An Answer demise. We didn’t look at all inside our frontiers, our look goes further beyond that, as much as far as we can from the regular musical taste of our fellow Spaniards. Pheeew!!!!
Does the Spain politics, or politics in general, reflect on TEETHING lyrics?
Not much, we’re more into dark humor, 90s movies and the likes when it comes to writing lyrics, sorry folks no politics here. Go be hypocrite with your Iphone 15 Pro Max on someone else’s time.
What is your music taste outside of the band, and how does it influence song-making process?
We’re very eclectic and hate purists all the fucking way down, BTW, fuck you ! Yeah we “try” to incorporate as much different stuff as we can and I love 90s rap and 90s NAPALM DEATH, sorry.
Your style is unapologetically brutal and chaotic. Do you remember the first song you did?
I joined the band in 2015 and love a lot the Ravage Ritual split, Starting Fires is one of my all time favorites of the band although I didn’t write it, credit goes to Charlie, Luis, David & Alvaro, thanks guys!
Where does it stand against the last one you did?
Some of the old tunes stand really, really high, although we sound a bit different now. Different people makes different approaches, but we try to be happy with what we write, and don’t worry, Alvaro is quite demanding when it comes to the “perceived quality” of the writings.
What does a typical TEETHING writing and recording session look like? You have recently released a new single, too.
Aawww man, we’re such a morons when it comes to writing, it takes us a lot of time until we figure our shit out, so that means a lot of time in the practice room, unfortunately.
Usually Alvaro and I come across with new ideas regularly and then the rest of the guys jump in. Then the process of recording is pretty straight forward, we try keep the studio time at a minimum. Then comes video recording and all the weird things Luis can come across with, he’s a bit of a character.
You have done a lot of split releases before your first full-length. And you continue to do that on regular basis. Do you find this helpful for other people to hear from you faster or is it just your thing? Is there a band out there you’d like to collaborate with in any way?
Yeah, it makes sense to write and issue as much material as possible to make your self heard, but these last years where trying to focus on writing at least enough material to release a full album instead of going with splits, the thing is that we love so much bands and have some very good friends we would like to collaborate with, that in the end we find ourselves always with a couple of splits in mind at least.
Uf, incredible bands, yes, ROTTEN SOUND, ESCUELA GRIND, WHORESNATION, CHIENS, SNUFFED ON SIGHT, NAILS, MAGRUDERGRIND 😞, the list would be endless, and this is just me, the other guys would have a list longer than mine for sure…
You can’t but notice your crazy album covers which are not typical grindcore covers. Who is in charge of them? What role does album artwork play in TEETHING story?
The graphical and design creativity is the sole responsibility of Luis, he’s a very talented guy when it comes to drawing, designing, marketing and thinking about the artwork and merchandise of the band. As the rest of us draw like a 6 years old he spares us the shame.
The artwork and merchandise are inseparable from the music in Teething, they just get together to form the whole Teething experience, the music alone would not be enough, the artwork just glues everything together, we’re really proud of it, Kudos to Luis for that!
With the rise of streaming and digital music consumption and presence, do you find it easily to book a gig or the whole tour? Are you generally satisfied with the support from fans through the sales of physical releases and band merch in general?
Generally speaking, people gets in touch with us because they’ve seen us somewhere or someone has talk to them about us, or they already know us directly, that’s why we try to play as much as possible and outside Spain if possible. Don’t know if that has something to do with the streaming thing, I tend to think it has nothing to do with it.
We get an incredible amount of support from fans sales wise, both music and merchandise, it keeps the machine going, without that, it would be almost impossible. Thanks guys!!
Can anyone remember what was the first show TEETHING ever played?
I wasn’t in the band but if I may recall correctly it was a reeeally cool gig with some impressive punk & crust bands from Spain.
Was there a funny moment or something unforgettable from one of your live performances? Being in a grindcore band must lead to some insane stories!
Uf, a lot of them, covering Earth Crisis with J.R. Hayes from PIG DESTROYER in Bloodshed Festival in the Netherlands, covering HATEBREED with Katerina from ESCUELA GRIND in Herrie Metal Fest in the Netherlands, covering Black Flag with Boris from DESPISE YOU in Pitfest in the Netherlands too, would be definitely some of those moments , eating pasteis de nata or cookies while playing, (thanks Luis 🙄), playing the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, all incredible experiences, and above all, all the fun we have together, we definitely have a good time together and with friends and fans, we just love it. Not to mention fighting Nazis near the Polish border in Germany and hiding weed in the van courtesy of Petro from IMPLORE, all cool stuff like that.
Where can people see you live in the future and how can they support you?
Where playing Death Feast Open Air in Germany, Dead Shall Rise in the Czech Republic, Inferno das Febras in Portugal and Masters of the Unicorn in Germany again at the end of August and at the beginning of September 2024, then we’ll take sometime to finish the album we’re still writing, then we’ll get into the studio to record the album and then we’ve got some more dates in 2025 around Europe, stay tuned guys!
TOP 3 Spanish beers?
Sorry man, no alcohol, not straight edge, but no alcohol, apart from that regular Jägermeister shot from time to time… ask Fernando, Luis & Alvaro, they’ll tell you.
“This is the end”, said THE DOORS. Any message to old and new fans?
Yes, they’re the reason why we keep going. Thanks for loving the music just as much as we do, we’re also huge fans from other bands, we’re all the same, it’s just a thing of where you’re at, at any given moment, on stage or in the crowd, I definitely love to be in both places. Cheers!
