From the very first moment you hear the sound of the Italian language in the samples and intros of grindcore bands, it becomes clear that you are in for something dark, ominous, and intense.
This is exactly the impression left by “Intifada,” the EP from the Italian grindcore band TERRAMORTA. The album opens with a minute and a half long intro, where an Italian language sample is intertwined with the band’s musical background, preparing you for what follows – an unrelenting assault.
TERRAMORTA doesn’t waste time on subtleties; as soon as the intro ends, the second track bursts in with an unforgiving blast, just as any real grindcore fan would expect. The lyrics of all the songs are in Italian, and while they may remain mysterious to many listeners outside of Italy, even with the help of Google Translate, the themes become apparent: social and existential issues, the war in Gaza, global conflicts, and all the things that make us humans.
Although it’s an EP, “Intifada” delivers a sound that is dirty, raw, and extremely powerful, with a dirty production – just the way I like it. The EP consists of 11 tracks, totaling just over 21 minutes, which is a real treat for all fans of Italian grindcore and d-beat. The range of song lengths, from short bursts of 50 seconds to slightly longer and more developed tracks lasting over three and a half minutes, shows that the band knows how to manage intensity and dynamics, while remaining true to the message they want to give us.
Track titles like “Noril’ sk” and “Cicatrici” further highlight the thematic seriousness the band tries to deliver to the listeners. Continuing with the title track “Intifada”, and all the way to the last one called “Terra Morta.” this EP delivers a consistent punch of anger and frustration, reflecting the reality that surrounds us all.
“Intifada” is an EP that not only satisfies but also exceeds expectations. TERRAMORTA demonstrates not only that they love what they do, but that they do it with an uncompromising attitude and strength that is characteristic of true representatives of the genre. If you’re looking for a sound that is both brutal, thoughtful, and from the heart of the Italian underground, this album is for you.
